| Massage during pregnancy focuses on
the special needs of the woman as her body goes through
dramatic changes. Massage therapy enhances the function
of muscles and joints, improves circulation and general
body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue. Touch
is vital to the mother's physical and emotional well being
as she adapts to her new body image. Regardless of
individual circumstances, a pregnant woman's body is challenged,
changed and stressed in many ways. Massage gives
special attention to the mother-to-be, which in turn nurtures
the new life that grows within her. |

| The Pregnant Body |
| Sarah is certified in Pre & Perinatal
Massage. She can effectively address specific issues that
arise during pregnancy including the common hip and low
back pain, swelling in hands and feet, and old injuries
that are exacerbated. Sarah will use her knowledge of
the pregnant body to position you in a comfortable and
safe way. Typically you will be supported with many pillows
whether you are positioned on your side or in a semi-reclined
position. Most women are amazed at how much strain is
relieved when they are positioned with so much support. |
| |
| Safety |
| Massage during pregnancy is safe for
most mothers. Sarah will ask questions to determine if
you are having any problems or complications with your
pregnancy before you begin. If you are, then she will
require approval from your primary health care provider
before proceeding. In all cases, she will avoid stimulating
particular points in the body during pregnancy and certain
techniques will be altered to ensure complete safety. |

| First Trimester |
| During their fist trimester, Sarah
takes care to ensure that her clients do not associate
any risk of miscarriage with massage. There is no evidence
that massage can compromise a pregnancy if performed with
certain precautions. In fact, the promotion of mother’s
well being can only support a healthy pregnancy. However,
if the mother has any anxiety about receiving massage
it should be avoided until she has become more comfortable
with being pregnant. |
| |
| Postpartum |
| Once the baby is born a woman’s
focus shifts from her own body to the care of her baby.
However, the dramatic changes are not yet over for the
mother. Massage can support healing after childbirth,
getting back into shape, and managing the physical and
emotional stress of caring for a newborn. |
