Craniosacral work is a very gentle, non-invasive
hands-on approach that focuses on the craniosacral system
of the body. This system includes the membranes and cerebrospinal
fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Most of us are unaware of the natural pump that moves the
cerebrospinal fluid through this system, but this subtle movement
is a messenger that allows a therapist to detect restrictions
and sources of pain. By tuning into this movement, called
the craniosacral rhythm, the therapist encourages the body’s
natural instinct to release harmful patterns.
This technique has been effective in evaluating
and treating problems associated with pain and dysfunction,
lowered vitality, and recurring infections. The light touch
employed in this approach encourages your own natural mechanisms
to improve the functioning of your brain and spinal cord,
to dissipate the negative effects of stress and to enhance
your general health and resistance to disease.
One of the most common causes of restrictions
and imbalance in the craniosacral system is the birth process
itself. The effects of prolonged labor, vacuum extraction,
forceps, or cesarean birth may cause both physical and emotional
injuries. These injuries can lead to chronic ear infections,
colic, breathing, swallowing, digestive or sensory-motor impairments
and more. Fortunately, babies can correct easily and quickly
because they have spent less time organizing themselves around
their physical and emotional restrictions. Craniosacral work
can address symptoms as they appear, but can also be used
as prevention.
Craniosacral work is meant to supplement
traditional medical care and is not a substitute for it.
